The Map of the Seven

Persia counted seven Holy Immortals around a fire. Enoch counted seven angels before the Lord. John saw seven lamps of fire burning before the throne. Here's how one council of seven travelled 3,000 years and landed in your Bible.

The Shared Sky

Before Persia, there was Babylon's sky.

The Flood Tablet sits in the British Museum, a cracked clay page from King Ashurbanipal's library at Nineveh, copied in the 7th century BC. When George Smith read it out loud in 1872, the room heard a flood story older than Genesis, and in its storm the Anunnaki lift up their torches and set the land ablaze.

Documented RecordAssyria carved its high god as a figure inside a winged disc, hovering over the king on the palace walls of Nimrud. When the Persians built Persepolis around 518 BC, they put the same winged ring above their own kings, and the world now calls it the Faravahar.

Engineering InferenceThe Persians didn't invent the image. They inherited it, and they changed what it meant. The crowded heaven of Mesopotamia got folded into one Wise Lord, Ahura Mazda, and a council of seven around him.

The Map

Three councils of seven, one fire in the middle.

Tap any light on the wheel. The inner ring is Persia's seven Holy Immortals, the Amesha Spentas, each one guarding a piece of creation. The middle ring is the seven holy angels named in 1 Enoch 20. The outer ring is the seven churches Jesus speaks to in Revelation 2 and 3, each with its own angel and its own lamp.

Documented RecordTobit 12:15 has the angel Raphael say he is "one of the seven holy angels" who go in before the glory of the Holy One. Revelation 4:5 puts "seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God."

Engineering InferenceNo text lines up Persia's seven with Enoch's seven name by name, so the wheel doesn't either. What carries across is the shape: seven beings standing before one throne of light, with fire at the center. That shape shows up in Jewish writing only after the exile in Persian Babylon.

The Anointed Persian

The only foreign king the Bible calls messiah.

In 539 BC Cyrus the Great took Babylon, and his own clay cylinder says he sent the captive peoples home and gave their gods back their temples. Ezra 1 says he told the Jews to go home and rebuild the house of the Lord in Jerusalem.

Documented RecordIsaiah 45:1 reads, "Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus." The Hebrew word is mashiach. A Persian king who never worshipped the God of Israel got the title Christians would one day give to Jesus.

Engineering InferenceThe books written after the return carry ideas the older ones barely touch: a final judgment, the dead rising (Daniel 12:2), named archangels and a single enemy of God. Persia already had all of them, with Angra Mainyu as the enemy, and scholars like Mary Boyce traced the line straight back to Zarathustra.

The Lamps

John turned around and saw seven golden candlesticks.

Revelation 1:12 starts the book with seven lamps, and verse 20 gives you the key: the seven candlesticks are the seven churches, and the seven stars in his right hand are their seven angels. Albrecht Dürer cut the scene in wood in 1498, the Son of Man standing in the middle of the fire.

Documented RecordBy chapter 4 the seven lamps are burning before the throne, and chapter 8 sends out the seven angels with seven trumpets. The whole book runs on sevens: seals, trumpets, bowls, thunders.

The Fire That Stayed Lit

The empire fell. The fire got on a boat.

In AD 651 the last Sasanian king was dead and Persia belonged to the Arab caliphate. Faithful Zoroastrians paid the jizya, a tax on non-Muslims, and a band of them finally sailed for Gujarat, India. The Qissa-i Sanjan tells how they landed at Sanjan and asked a local king for a place to keep their fire.

Documented RecordThat fire is the Iranshah Atash Behram. It moved to Udvada in 1742, priests feed it by hand in shifts, and the community dates its consecration to AD 721. Today the Parsis who keep it number fewer than 200,000 people worldwide.

The Magi

The first to kneel were priests of the fire.

Matthew 2 says magi came from the east following a star, and they knelt before the child with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Herodotus already used the word magi for a priestly tribe of the Medes, the keepers of the Persian rites.

Documented RecordZoroastrian scripture waits for the Saoshyant, a savior born of a virgin at the end of the age. The Bundahishn says Zarathustra's seed is kept in Lake Kansaoya, and a maiden who bathes there conceives him.

Engineering InferenceAround AD 560 the mosaic artists of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna dressed the three in Persian trousers and caps. A church letter from 836 says Persian soldiers spared the Church of the Nativity in 614 because they saw their own people kneeling in its mosaic.

Walk the Seven

Good thoughts, good words, good deeds.

Zarathustra boiled the faith down to three Avestan words, Humata, Hukhta, Hvarshta. Each Holy Immortal guards one piece of creation, so you honor it by tending that piece. Take one a day for a week.

  1. Spenta Mainyu · HumanitySay one word today that heals a person, and say it to their face.

Thank you, and I love you.

The flame never went out. It's been waiting for you to tend it.
